Mum and dad got together when I was about 5, and that’s when dad became my father.

Dad rode from Sydney to Perth on mostly gravel roads, doing it twice with no backup support—just him, his bike, and a small backpack with a few spare tires.

That was his welcome party, one of his friends, with no major media coverage, just a brief story about his difficult ride.

He was a hard and determined man, fiercely committed to ensuring he finished his ride, no matter the obstacles that lay ahead or the hardships he faced along the way. With each pedal stroke, he pushed through the fatigue and embraced the challenge, embodying the spirit of perseverance that drove him to go farther than he ever thought possible. Rain or shine, he would not be swayed; his focus was unwavering, and the thrill of the journey fueled his relentless pursuit of completion.

Dad use to love catching up with his old mates that rode with or against him on the track or road racing. Each reunion was filled with laughter and endless stories of their youthful adventures, as they reminisced about the exhilarating races that had once defined their lives. The camaraderie they shared was palpable, as they relived those thrilling moments of adrenaline-pumping competition. They would often exchange tips and updates about their current lives, discovering how time had shaped their journeys, yet somehow deep down, they were still those same passionate riders who cherished the freedom of the road and the thrill of the chase.
Dad has been gone for over a year now, but he is always remembered in my heart as a man of great achievements, a wonderful dad, and a devoted family man. His impact on our lives was profound, but more than anything, he was simply a down-to-earth individual with strong morals that guided him throughout his life. He approached each day with a fantastic attitude, finding joy in both the big moments and the seemingly small ones. His unwavering respect for people he met over his 97 years was evident to all who knew him; he treated everyone with kindness and dignity, leaving a lasting impression on many. As he moved through life, he influenced others not only through his successes but also through his humility and grace. Many in his life respected him immensely for who he was, making him a true champion in every sense of the word, both in his accomplishments and in his relationships. His legacy continues to inspire me and those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dad had a great enjoyment in life, and that was his grandkids and his great grandkids, who brought him immense joy and laughter. He would light up with happiness whenever they gathered around him, sharing stories and playing games. They loved it when we all went over to spend time with him and Mum, as those moments were filled with warmth, love, and cherished memories that would last a lifetime. The sound of their laughter echoed through the house, creating an atmosphere of joy that enveloped everyone, making each visit a special occasion that we all looked forward to with eager anticipation.
