I have had the opportunity to work for a company called Rise over the last seven months, where my role involves various responsibilities, including gardening and lawn maintenance. In addition to these tasks, I also assist with window cleaning when needed, ensuring that the premises remain tidy and presentable. My work is not only focused on aesthetics; I take pride in helping to create a safe environment by removing spider webs and other potential hazards. This role is particularly fulfilling as Rise provides essential aged care support services, youth, and disability care, allowing me to contribute positively to the lives of others while developing my skills in various maintenance areas. This combination of duties enables me to be a vital part of the community, ensuring that both the living spaces and the individuals who rely on these services are well looked after.

We average about four jobs a day, which takes into account the travel time from one job to another. Each appointment typically requires us to spend anywhere from one hour to ninety minutes on the premises, depending on the specific needs and circumstances of each job. This means that our day is quite packed, with every moment dedicated to providing the best service possible. Managing travel between multiple locations can be challenging, but it also allows us to connect with a diverse range of clients and fulfill various tasks that keep our work dynamic and engaging.

I also get the chance to transport clients in a pickup and take them to their doctors’ appointments, physiotherapy sessions, and from the hospital. This role allows me to provide essential assistance to those who may have difficulty getting to their medical appointments on their own due to various reasons, such as mobility issues or lack of transportation. I ensure that each client feels comfortable and well-cared for during the journey, engaging in friendly conversation to alleviate any anxiety they may have about their appointments. Being part of their healthcare journey is incredibly rewarding, and I take pride in helping them reach the care they need, contributing to their overall well-being.

Through this journey with gardening and transport, I have encountered so many interesting people, each with a unique story to tell. The stories often reflect their younger days, sharing memories of raising a family, navigating the complexities of war, overcoming health issues, or recounting heartwarming love stories. Every interaction becomes an enlightening experience as I engage in conversations filled with rich details and emotive expressions. These individuals possess a wealth of knowledge and life experiences, offering insights that resonate deeply within me. Just chatting with them reveals layers of understanding and wisdom, conveying the richness of their lives. Each word they share brings not only their history to life but also a connection that transcends mere conversation, creating bonds over shared humanity.

The company doesn’t mind if the client asks you to have a coffee and lend an ear; it’s something that happens every now and then in our line of work. This casual meeting often serves as a crucial opportunity for clients to express their feelings and share the burdens they carry. It’s a sign of loneliness and a genuine need to chat about subjects that they urgently need to get off their chest. I’ve had a couple of instances where I left the client feeling uplifted and empowered, but I couldn’t help but cry knowing what they have been through. Their resilience, despite life’s challenges, showcases an incredible attitude that is both inspiring and thought-provoking. In those moments, I always reflect on my own life and realize that, despite my own struggles, I have much to be grateful for. These encounters remind us of the shared humanity that binds us and highlight the importance of compassion and understanding in all our interactions. It makes you truly appreciate the small joys in life and encourages a deeper connection with those around us, fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels heard and valued.

I have to say, it puts a smile on my face as I finish the job of transporting or in the gardens, as I see their gratitude reflected in their sincere thank yous. They express it with such warmth and a bright smile, which makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that at the end of the day, I’ve been able to give someone a bit of joy through doing something that brings them immense happiness. This connection reassures me that my efforts are meaningful. Moreover, I truly feel like I am making a small but significant contribution back to society, especially for the older generation. Their stories and experiences become a source of inspiration for me, making this work not just a job but a rewarding journey filled with human connection in so many valuable ways. This deepens my appreciation for each encounter and reinforces my commitment to helping others in whatever way I can.
