Its Great Having A Pet, For So Many Reasons.

I have had pets all my life in one way or another, well as a cat I had for many years growing up which was a Siamese twin and she was so affectionate and lovable but only for one person. She wouldn’t go to anyone else. She was funny like that.

But most of my life I’ve had dogs, and I had a couple of good ones. As a little boy, I had a dog called Rover who was like my bodyguard. He followed me everywhere and really made sure that I was okay.

I had my own dogs as I went different ways in life. There was Jabba, the most beautiful Blue Heeler I had experienced. He traveled all over Australia with Maree and me. He was brilliant and never left us, always next to us at the beach, walking, coffee, whatever we did. He had an almost human personality.

What can I say about Stinger? Wow, what an amazing dog! The kids were getting older and played with Stinger all the time. He was such a great family dog. He loved attention and loved being on the beach or going fishing and crabbing. We were down living in Denmark, so he had a lot of room to move, which was good because he had so much energy to release. Stinger was a very active dog and such a good guard dog to go with it.

After a while, I sort of gave up having pets as I was busy with other things in life. But my daughter had kids and they needed a pet dad. Oh no, here we go, but yes, we got two, not one: Skyla & Odin. Skyla was a little Bull Mastiff and Odin was an English Bull Mastiff. Two different dogs in personality, but brilliant together. They were so kid-oriented, both loved the kids, and really looked after them in their own way.

Now we have Tummer, a French Cane Corso. He’s only 2 and a half years old, but he’s a very big and already powerful dog. I have to say he’s a one-family dog and very protective when it comes to us, but he’s also gentle, especially when it comes to babies. He walks around our baby girl, Ava, with ease and the instinct of knowing that she is very young and small. With us, it’s more of a “manly” way of interacting, but still gentle. I got home last night after a two-week stint, went out to the back, and spent some time with him. He just kisses me and gives me a hug (lol), and then we both just sit down and chat away. Tummer looks at me with interest, as if he understands every word I say. It’s interesting and really good. He’s like one of my best mates.

I know with pets, they can be very good and help different people with different things and therapeutic when it comes to sickness, loneliness, illness, or just a great bond of friendship. For what ever reason we have pets they are good and can be very special, but we all go through the loss of them as they go through their ages and can be very sad to lose a loved one, and that is the way most of us treat them. I know every time we get a pet, to us, he or she is family and we treat them like our kids, and for me, they can be my best mate and the one that I love having with me.
